A more challenging and remote alternative to the Northwest loop, this incredible route takes you through varied vistas and mountain ranges, along lakes and rivers, and through jungle and tiered paddy fields rising and falling as far as the eye can see. Along the way, you will be hosted by different hill tribes wearing amazingly elaborate and colourful costumes. These are people who have been living in the hills for centuries, and their way of life has little changed from generation to generation. This is an adventure of a lifetime.

Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo (B,L,D)
Meet your driver 7:30am at your hotel. Soon the bustling streets of Hanoi give way to verdant rice paddies and farmland along Hwy 32. By early afternoon you will be travelling away from the Red River Delta and into the mountains of Yen Bai province, on your way to your destination of Nghia Lo. Nghia Lo is situated along a beautiful mountain ridge separating the Red and Black river. With lush forests, tea plantations, rice terraces and gum trees, the picturesque valleys are stunning. The area is home to Thai, Nung, H'mong, La Ha and Ma ethnic minority peoples. Overnight in your hotel.

Day 2: Nghia Lo – Mu Cang Chai – Than Uyen. (B,L,D)
This day starts with a visit to the local market in Nghia Lo Town, a chance to explore and shop for local handicrafts. Today the drive will take you along one of the most exciting stretches of road in Vietnam and offers some of the lushest and varied scenery found anywhere. As you climb over the mountain pass to Mu Cang Chai you will meet H'mong, La Ha and Dzao tribe people along the way. The road, which is unsealed and can be muddy and exciting. It winds along the Nam Kim river which descends the valley over some cascading gorges. At the bottom of the valley you will arrive in the town of Than Uyen where you will spend the night in your hotel.

Day 3: Than Uyen - Sapa – Ta Van (B,L,D)
Enjoy breakfast in a local restaurant and then the tour heads to Sapa. From Than Uyen the road follows the valley of the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, home to Mt. Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest peak. Tea plantations and rice terraces hug the Nam Ma river that meanders through this valley dotted with Tay, Dzao and H'mong villages. At Binh Lu junction you will meet the main road and start your ascent of the highest mountain pass in Vietnam at 1900 meters to arrive at the town of Sapa. Enjoy lunch and relax before a 3 hour short trek down this stunning valley, sculpted with steep rice terraces, to Ta Van village for your home stay. Your guide will cook you a delicious dinner of traditional Vietnamese food and you can enjoy the hospitality of your Dzay hosts.

Day 4: Ta Van – Sapa – Cat Cat – Sin Chai (B,L,D)
At sunrise enjoy your breakfast and return to Sapa for your next trek. Hike through the town market and leave the busy town behind. Shortly, you will follow a road going downhill to Cat Cat village. Stop by a waterfall and a hydroelectric station to take a rest. You continue to trek downhill to Sin Chai village. Enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way back to Sapa town for lunch. Then you will have free time to explore Sapa afternoon. Enjoy your evening meal and stay overnight in Sapa at your hotel .

Day 5 : Saturday Sapa – Can Cau – Bac Ha (B,L,D)
Depart Sapa at 6am. for the 3 hour drive to Can Cau which is located in the mountainous border area, 20 km from Bac Ha. Can Cau is a small, but very colorful market centre. Open only on Saturdays, it always delivers a photographic opportunity with the colorful displays of ethnic costumes of the Flower Hmong, Black Zao, Phu La hill tribes. Chinese people also come here for trading. Spending the morning exploring the market and then depart for Bac Ha town for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will take a walk to Ban Pho village home to the Nung and Flower Hmong who are located in this small valley. The villagers grow vegetables and fruit trees. One of the most famous fruits of the area is plum. You will be able to visit a local house, where you may have the chance to taste a cup of corn wine, another famous product of the village. Arrive at your hotel in Bac Ha late in the afternoon. Check into your hotel and enjoy dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 6 : Sunday Bac Ha – Xin Man – Ha Giang (B,L,D)
Bac Ha market in the early morning is a huge market populated by the Flower H'mong in their colourful outfits and has a range of basic goods and items for visitors. From 9:00am. the market is busy with tourists. From Bac Ha your tour will drive to Ha Giang along the switchback roads through the mountains following river valleys. With the spectacular scenery this is a great photographic opportunity for landscape images to be captured. Overnight in Ha Giang at your hotel.

Day 7 :Ha Giang – Quan Ba – Yen Minh – Meo Vac – Dong Van (B,L,D)
Breakfast is served outside of your hotel. Today your adventure begins as soon as you leave town and enter a land of colorful mountain hill tribes and seemingly impossible landscapes. You will stop in Quan Ba District. This area has wonderful weather year round. The tour proceeds to the pass known as Sky Gate where you can visit Fairy Mountain a village known for its hand weaving. Enjoy a break in Yen Minh town and continue to Meo Vac town visiting a Dao minority tribe house. You have the chance to view the Nho Que River at Ma Pileng Point. The journey ends today at the Dong Van District where you will spend overnight in hotel.

Day 8: Dong Van - Lung Cu - Sa Phin - Ha Giang (B,L,D)
Breakfast is served outside of your you depart to visit the Lo Lo minority tribe’s village. You will visit ancient houses, trek about 1 km. to Flag tower on the top of Lung Cu mountain and have an amazing view of this ancient valley. After that you go to Sa Phin village to visit the former Meo King palace, stopping on the way to visit Lung Tao, a small village. On a Sunday, you have the chance to visit the local market, witnessing the traditional life of the high minority group in Ha Giang. Overnight is in the hotel in Ha Giang.

Day 9: Ha Giang – Hanoi (B ,L)
Arise at sunrise for your breakfast and prepare for your return to Hanoi. Your lunch will be at Tuyen Quang. Your tour will finish in Hanoi in the late afternoon.
